Early History & The Ocoee Dam System
The Ocoee River flows through the stunning Cherokee National Forest, originally home to the Cherokee people before European settlers arrived in the 19th century. In the early 1900s, the river became a source of hydroelectric power, leading to the construction of dams and diversion channels by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
- 1913 – The Wooden Flume Line was built to divert water from the Upper Ocoee to generate electricity, leaving a dry riverbed for over 60 years.
- 1930s – TVA expanded the hydroelectric system, constructing Ocoee Dams No. 1, 2, and 3, which controlled water flow but largely halted recreational use of the river.
The Birth of Ocoee Whitewater Rafting
For much of the 20th century, the Middle and Upper Ocoee River remained dry due to water being diverted for power generation. However, in the 1970s, a critical change set the stage for the rise of commercial whitewater rafting.
- 1976 – The flume line carrying water around the Middle Ocoee collapsed, forcing TVA to release water back into the river. As a result, kayakers and rafting enthusiasts discovered the incredible whitewater rapids, and commercial rafting companies quickly saw the potential.
- 1980s – The Ocoee River rafting industry exploded, with outfitters offering guided trips on the Middle Ocoee. The river became known as one of the best whitewater rafting destinations in the U.S..
The 1996 Olympic Games & the Upper Ocoee Revival
The Upper Ocoee River, once dry due to the TVA dam system, received worldwide attention when it was chosen as the site of the 1996 Summer Olympic whitewater events.
- 1993-1996 – A man-made whitewater course was constructed on the Upper Ocoee to host the Olympic slalom canoe and kayak competitions—making it the only Olympic whitewater course on a natural river.
- 1996 – The Atlanta Olympics brought international recognition to the Ocoee River, boosting tourism and leading to the Upper Ocoee being opened for recreational rafting on select days.

We offer this Section as part of our Full River trip which is a total of 10 Miles. 5 Miles on the Upper and 5 miles on The Middle section. This is our more advance trip on the Ocoee River and in the State of Tennessee. Experience a thrill in extreme whitewater rafting!
This section runs on Weekends Saturday & Sunday 5/28-9/4
